Living life eclectically

Hi! My name is B, and I am a 21 year old non-binary artist based in Kalamazoo, MI. Mixed media design has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember- with my earliest hobby (at 7) was building two-story paper houses from tape and magazines! I would draw and cut household items for my paper doll houses and build a community of paper homes. Although the houses would get destroyed from play- I started to develop a passion for small detailed work and painting.

I eventually advanced from paper-mache to clay, creating jewelry and charms when I was 10. At school, I would sell my pieces in the classroom and on the playground. I even opened a small Esty shop with my older sister to sell my charms! As I aged, I developed a passion for textile design, fashion, photography, acrylic painting, and beading. Basically, if I can do a craft with two hands- I am instantly interested.

“Eclectic Bee” reflects my array of interests and my chaotic design process. I love vivid color in my designs and my wardrobe, so I wanted to reflect that idea in my brand identity. Additionally, I love bee imagery and the detailed work that bees perform. My work is often inspired by nature and my environment.

My parents were also young entrepreneurs- owning two clothing stores in California (“Buzz” and “The Ultimate Outlet”)- so this platform is also an homage to their early careers. Many of my earliest childhood memories took place in the Los Angles Fashion District, and I remember many long hours hiding in clothing racks and trying on sequin clothing. I would often roam my parent’s store during the day, transfixed on their sewing machines and price guns- trying to use them myself. I loved the community my parents had built from their business and I would regularly talk for hours with employees and customers.

Growing into my adulthood now, I want to create a community through art. I want to tell stories through my various mediums, and communicate love and passion in everything I produce. I want to embrace the disorderly way of life and share that space with the world!
